Minutes from 28 July 2009

2009/07/28 CSEP Meeting

Attendees: Yan K., Jeremy Z., John Y., Masha L.

  1. csep-op:
    1. V9.7.0 release:
      • Re-processing of California's one-day and RELM forecasts groups due to the ANSS catalog fixes
        1. NFS server crashed on July 26, 2009
        2. John suggested to switch NFS server - may be at the same time with next V9.10 release
      • New forecasts groups:
        1. California's three-months-alarm-models-V9.7 with EAST model from Peter Shebalin
        2. Global one-day-models-V9.7 with Kagan-Jackson one-day model using CMT catalog
  2. Software development:
    1. Re-implementation of Matlab evaluation tests in Python
      • Masha discovered that SciPy can load and write Matlab format files
      • Masha will concentrate on re-writing of evaluation tests first (Matlab wrappers for each test will call Python code)
      • Forecast preparation routines and storing of results in XML format will be also re-written in Python
    2. Trac ticket #140 for scalar moment magnitude precision in one-line-per-event formatting of CMT catalog is fixed:
      • Triple_S (Jeremy's models) and DBM (Anna Maria's models) for Western Pacific and Global testing regions are not affected
      • Yan's models that use CMT catalog will need to be re-generated
        1. Yan would not insist on re-processing but would prefer to have complete CMT information passed to the model
        2. Masha filed a Trac ticket #165
  3. mini_CSEP distribution
    • Jeremy circulated an initial list of requirments within CSEP development team:
      • * convert a ForecastML forecast to MATLAB format
        * convert a MATLAB forecast to ForecastML format
        * generate a plot of the spatial distribution of the forecast (i.e.,
        map-view of the forecast)
        * generate a plot of the magnitude distribution of the forecast (i.e.,
magnitude versus normalized probability--I have attached an example )
        * execute an L-test (including appropriate plot)
        * execute an M-test (including appropriate plot)
        * execute an N-test (including appropriate plot)
        * execute an R-test (including appropriate plot)
        * execute an S-test (including appropriate plot)
    • We should provide list of external package dependencies and links to these package
    • May have an intermediate release when distribution is ready
  4. Jeremy sent out an updated version of the manuscript for ACES publication to the group
  5. CSEP paper for EScience Conference
    • No updates
  6. Hardware:
    1. csep-cert
      • CSEPWebTest.py is not part of nightly build - some issues connecting to the web server
        1. John will look at the problem
